About
Us In August 2004, proposals were accepted by the City of Salinas from prospective tenants interested in operating the Firehouse Recreation center located on East Alisal. The City Council voted in favor of La Union del Pueblo Entero (LUPE), and soon thereafter LUPE's Central Coast operation was calling the Firehouse home. Services including free lunches for seniors and free art lessons for youth continue under the management of LUPE staff. Expanded services include those geared towards empowering through education a population often forgotten -- working latinos and immigrant families. From the Firehouse three LUPE community organizers, a program manager, a site coordinator, and an instructor serve as the community organizing arm of the farm worker movement in the Central Coast area. LUPE organizers build relationships with members of the Salinas community, as well as the remote areas of Jimenez, Chualar, Camphora, Greenfield, and Soledad. Through organizing, leaders develop and receive the education and direction needed to effectively engage in civic action. Visit our Events Calendar to learn more about services offered. |

Membership Our membership is the force driving what we do on a day-to-day basis. Our services, programs, and planning activities are tailored to meet the immediate and long-term needs of our members - farm workers and their families. Currently, our membership consists primarily of lower-income farm working and immigrant families living in the Central Coast of California. In the last year, LUPE organizers have engaged "comite," and 300 members in five areas of the Central Coast: |
In
the coming year, LUPE will offer membership to a broader audience supporting
the mission of our organization. LUPE has received much support from the
private sector and our membership packages will be designed to include
them in our work. |
